DDLJ Musical Faces Criticism: Internet ANGRY Over Casting White Actor Austin Colby As Shah Rukh Khan’s Raj; Netizen Says, ‘This Is Horrifying'
Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol starrer 1995 romantic drama ‘Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge’ is one of the most loved and iconic films of Bollywood. Much to fans’ delight, filmmaker Aditya Chopra will make his debut as a director on Broadway with Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge-inspired Come Fall In Love - The DDLJ Musical. Yes, you read that right. The film will be bankrolled by Yash Raj Films and stars British actor Austin Colby and Shoba Narayan in the lead roles.

However, casting a white actor to play SRK’s character Raj has not gone down well with netizens. Many users condemned it on Twitter and said it is absolutely unacceptable. Clearly, the internet is not happy with the makers roping in Austin Colby to step into Shah Rulh’s shoes in DDLJ Musical. Expressing his dismay, one fan wrote, “this is beyond HORRIFYING. So broadway is adapting the iconic Bollywood movie, DDLJ into a musical and guess who they cast to play Raj... YES A WHITE MAN.” Another tweeted, “Having a white man playing the role of Raj Malhotra in the DDLJ musical is completely and absolutely unacceptable.”

Earlier this month, Austin announced the news via a post on his Instagram handle. He said that he was in awe of this beautiful love story of Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge which celebrates Bollywood film at its finest. The actor also thanked  Aditya Chopra for trusting him with the role of Raj (now Rog) to bring Bollywood to Broadway. Austin called it the greatest honor of his career and hopes to make SRK proud with this project.

On a related note, the musical, which will have lyrics by Laurence Olivier Award-winner Nell Benjamin, is said to have its world premiere at the Old Globe Theatre in San Diego.
